MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH: IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

While May is known as Mental Health Month, it’s important to remember that there are those suffering from mental health problems all year long. May is to help us raise awareness for the importance of mental health and how important it is for us take a concrete stand in helping our loved ones that may be dealing with mental health issues.

How Do You Handle Stress?

Life is full of obstacles and challenges and these challenges can present themselves to us at the worst possible times. Therefore, an important thing to remember if you wish to remain healthy and happy is to take steps in managing the amount of stresses in our lives and dealing with them in an effective manner.

Whether it is employment, family life, or money, all of us need to learn how to cope best with stress. The very strategies that we use in dealing with our stress will be able to determine how happy we are in our lives and whether mental health issues affect us or not. Stress is a major cause of all mental health issues, and while certain levels of stress are fine and even productive, problems start arising when we start taking too much of it. Along with mental health issues, stress also contributes to the following problems:

  • Cancer
  • Decreased Immune Defenses
  • Heart Disease And Stroke
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Poorer Brain Functioning
  • Stomach Problems

Here are some of the symptoms experienced as a result of stress:

  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Headaches
  • Inability to control anger
  • Increased or decreased eating
  • Increased use of caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs
  • Loss of concentration
  • Thinking about what you should be doing often

If such symptoms are experienced on a regular basis, seeking professional help is recommended with both a medical provider and a mental health professional to develop certain coping strategies to keep you in complete control of your life. Here are various coping strategies that might just be helpful in such situations:

  • Trying to be optimistic about situations and keeping an open mind
  • Connecting with others as much as possible
  • Making sure that you get sufficient amounts of sleep
  • Eating well
  • Exercising every day

There is no shame in asking for it so that you get cured in a timely manner. It is known around 80% of the people who seek treatment for depression end up improving their lives.
