HOW TO CONTROL ANGER: ANGER MANAGEMENT FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Charles Spielberger, PhD, a psychologist who specializes in the study of anger, says that anger is considered “an emotional state that varies in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage.” Similar to other emotions, it is accompanied by physiological and biological changes, and can be triggered by both external and internal events.

In life, we are often confronted with unforeseen circumstances in which might make us angry. However, everyone handles his or her anger differently. In the case that you or someone you know who is experiencing extreme signs of anger, there is a solution. Here are some tips on anger management for both children and adults:

Take Deep Breaths

When you start to feel upset and angry, take a deep breath. Although this may seem simple, it is proven to be most effective. Taking deep breaths allows your mind and body to relax, while also giving you time to rethink the situation.

Express your Feelings

If you are angry with someone or something, it is important to communicate your feelings. Once you have calmed down (by taking deep breaths) be sure to express your frustration and concerns, and explain why the situation is making you upset. By expressing your feelings, not only will you feel better, but you’re one step closer to resolving the issue at hand.

Go for a Walk

Physical activity can help reduce or even eliminate stress that can cause you to become angry. If you feel anger approaching, go for a fast-paced walk, jog, or some other kind of enjoyable physical activity.

Accept Your Faults

No one is perfect, therefore, it is important to recognize that although you are upset with someone/ something else, you are not completely innocent. Most of the time you can’t control other’s actions, so take hold of your own and breathe.

Be Mindful

Being aware that you have an issue with anger is crucial and shouldn’t be ignored. Be conscious of your actions and pursue peace. Holding a grudge is only going to hurt you in the end; try to let go of the things you can’t control. Learn to relax while being mindful of your perception of the situation at the same time.
