The group therapy modality is used throughout many of the David Lawrence Center treatment, intervention and prevention programs. The following group therapy programs have been designed to address specific mental health and/or substance abuse problems in children. Children must meet certain clinical criteria to be entered into a group therapy program determined through a clinical assessment.
The Talk It Out group therapy program is designed for intermediate and elementary school children (ages 6-12) who, as a result of a variety of presenting problems and diagnoses struggle with impulse control, anger control, aggression and problem solving. Talk It Out engages children in discussions using role playing, informal discussion, bibliotherapy and music and art therapy. Groups are held weekly. Program length is typically eight sessions however, some children may benefit from additional sessions.
The goal of this group is to teach children effective:
- Coping skills
- Relaxation techniques
- Problem solving skills
- Anger management strategies
Talk It Out is held in Naples at the Main Campus in the Children's Outpatient Services Department, Building D.
Teen Survival Skills is a group therapy program designed to help adolescents, ages 13 to 17, who struggle with coexisting mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and anger and a substance abuse problems. This group will assist members to work through their challenges with peer support. This therapeutic program offers both mental health and substance abuse treatment. Each client will receive a comprehensive clinical assessment and an individualized treatment plan prior to the start of the program. The length of stay is individualized and dependent on the level of the individual's substance abuse problem. The program meets once a week for an average of 12 weeks.
Teen Survival Skills covers topics such as:
- Learning impulse control
- Regulating emotions
- Becoming abstinent and maintaining
- Abstinence from drugs and alcohol
- Controlling anger
- Addressing faulty thought processes
- Coping with depression
- Developing stress management skills
Adolescents must meet certain clinical criteria to be entered into this group therapy program determined through a clinical assessment. Clients should call Juvenile Assessment Services to schedule an initial assessment.
Teen Survival Skills is held in Naples at the Main Campus in the Children's Outpatient Services Department, Building D and in Immokalee.
Breaking the Chains is an intensive adolescent substance abuse group therapy program designed to help children, ages 14 to 17, who struggle with coexisting substance dependence and mental health and behavioral issues such as depression, anxiety and anger. This psychoeducational, therapeutic program provides mental health and substance abuse treatment, education, support and structure designed to help adolescents overcome chemical dependency and learn how to live a substance-free lifestyle. The length of stay is individualized and dependent on the level of the individual's substance abuse problem. The program meets three days week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Prior to the start of the program, each client will receive a comprehensive clinical assessment and an individualized treatment plan which can include individual and family therapy. Clients are subject to random drug and alcohol screens.

is a social skills development group therapy program that focuses on breaking barriers children have when socializing with peers, family members or other adults. This group is designed for children 9-14 years of age who present with developmental or learning difficulties which lead to challenges when relating to others. P.O.W.E.R. will help develop understanding of boundaries, empathy, manners, as well as social norms and expectations. The group therapy modality allows group members to practice social skills techniques first hand with their peers. The program meets once a week for an average of eight weeks.
P.O.W.E.R. covers topics such as:
- Understanding social norms and expectations
- Developing an understanding of boundaries
- Learning about empathy
- Learning and practicing good manners
- Teaching respect for the rights of others
- Developing a sense of responsibility for one's own actions
